Quick Answer
The best ELSS mutual funds are equity schemes that let you claim a deduction of up to ₹1.5 lakh under Section 80C while carrying the shortest lock-in period (3 years) of any 80C product. Well-known options investors track in 2026 include Parag Parikh ELSS Tax Saver, Mirae Asset ELSS Tax Saver, Quant ELSS Tax Saver, Canara Robeco ELSS Tax Saver, SBI Long Term Equity Fund and Axis ELSS Tax Saver.
Important: the 80C deduction is available only if you file under the old tax regime. Under the new regime (the default from FY 2025-26), ELSS gives no tax deduction — it is then simply an equity fund.
Every year between January and March, the same question lands in our Jaipur office: "Sir, tax bachane ke liye kya lein?" Insurance agents push endowment plans, banks push tax-saving FDs, and someone in the family always swears by PPF. Yet the one product that quietly does both jobs — saving tax and building real wealth — is the Equity Linked Savings Scheme, better known as ELSS.
This guide explains what ELSS mutual funds are, how the lock-in and taxation actually work, how to shortlist the best ELSS funds for SIP in 2026, and — the part most articles skip — whether ELSS still deserves a place in your portfolio now that the new tax regime has become the default.
What Is an ELSS Mutual Fund?
An Equity Linked Savings Scheme (ELSS) is a diversified equity mutual fund that qualifies for deduction under Section 80C of the Income Tax Act. SEBI requires an ELSS fund to invest at least 80% of its assets in equity and equity-related instruments, and every unit you buy is locked in for three years from the date of allotment.
In plain language: your money goes into the stock market through a professional fund manager, you get a tax deduction for investing it, and you cannot pull it out for three years. That forced patience is not a bug — it is the single biggest reason ELSS investors tend to behave better than the average equity investor.

Why ELSS Beats Most Other Section 80C Options
Section 80C is crowded. PPF, EPF, life insurance premiums, tax-saving fixed deposits, NSC, tuition fees, home loan principal — all of them compete for the same ₹1.5 lakh ceiling. Here is how the popular ones stack up:
| 80C Option | Lock-in | Return Type | Taxation on Maturity |
|---|---|---|---|
| ELSS | 3 years | Market-linked (equity) | LTCG at 12.5% above ₹1.25 lakh |
| PPF | 15 years | Fixed, govt-declared | Fully exempt |
| Tax-saving FD | 5 years | Fixed interest | Interest fully taxable at slab |
| NSC | 5 years | Fixed interest | Interest taxable at slab |
| ULIP | 5 years | Market-linked + cover | Exempt subject to premium limits |
Three points stand out. ELSS has the shortest lock-in by a wide margin. It is the only mainstream 80C product with genuine equity exposure. And unlike a tax-saving FD, its gains are taxed at a concessional long-term capital gains rate rather than at your slab.
The trade-off is equally honest: ELSS can fall. A bad 18 months in the market can leave your fund in the red exactly when the lock-in ends. PPF cannot do that to you. ELSS is for the portion of your 80C money you genuinely do not need for five years or more.
How to Choose the Best ELSS Mutual Funds
Roughly forty ELSS schemes are available in India, and every one of them will be "top-rated" on some website. Ignore the star ratings and apply these filters instead:
- Consistency over headline returns. A fund that ranked in the top half across five, seven and ten-year rolling periods is worth more than last year's chart-topper. One-year winners are usually just riding a sector.
- Expense ratio. Always compare the direct plan. A 0.7% direct plan versus a 1.8% regular plan is roughly 1.1% of your corpus surrendered every single year — over 20 years that difference is enormous.
- Fund manager tenure. A strong ten-year record means little if the manager who built it left last year. Check who is running the fund today.
- Portfolio composition. Some ELSS funds are large-cap heavy and steady; others carry 40%+ in mid and small caps and swing hard. Neither is wrong — but match it to your stomach.
- Downside capture. How did the fund behave in 2008, 2020 and 2022? The best ELSS funds for SIP are usually the ones that fell less, not the ones that rose most.
- AUM sanity. A very large small-cap-tilted ELSS can struggle to move in and out of positions. Very small AUM brings its own concentration risk.
Top ELSS Mutual Funds in India to Evaluate in 2026
Below are ELSS schemes that consistently appear on serious investors' shortlists, grouped by the style they follow. We have deliberately not printed return percentages — NAV-based numbers change every day, and any table of returns you read in an article is stale before you act on it. Pull live data from the AMC factsheet or AMFI before you invest.
| ELSS Fund | Investment Style | Typically Suits |
|---|---|---|
| Parag Parikh ELSS Tax Saver | Value-conscious, concentrated, low churn | Patient long-term investors |
| Mirae Asset ELSS Tax Saver | Quality large-cap tilt, diversified | First-time equity investors |
| Canara Robeco ELSS Tax Saver | Conservative, downside-aware | Lower volatility tolerance |
| Quant ELSS Tax Saver | High-churn, momentum driven | High risk appetite only |
| SBI Long Term Equity Fund | Multi-cap, long track record | Core portfolio allocation |
| Axis ELSS Tax Saver | Growth/quality bias | Growth-style believers |
| HDFC ELSS Tax Saver | Value tilt, cyclical exposure | Value-style believers |
How to use this table: pick one, at most two. ELSS funds are diversified equity funds — owning five of them does not diversify you, it just gives you five copies of the same Nifty with five separate lock-in calendars to track. This list is educational and is not a recommendation to buy any specific scheme.

ELSS SIP vs Lumpsum: What Works Better?
A systematic investment plan (SIP) is the sensible default for ELSS. Twelve instalments of ₹12,500 spread across the year average out your purchase price, remove market timing from the equation, and — crucially — stop the March panic where you dump ₹1.5 lakh into whatever your bank relationship manager suggests at 6 pm on the 31st.
There is one wrinkle unique to ELSS: each SIP instalment has its own three-year lock-in. The April 2026 instalment unlocks in April 2029; the March 2027 instalment unlocks in March 2030. So a 12-month SIP is fully liquid only after four years, not three. Plan redemptions accordingly.
Lumpsum makes sense in two situations: you receive a bonus and want the deduction in the same financial year, or markets have corrected sharply and you are deploying deliberately. Use our mutual fund calculator to model both paths before you commit.
ELSS Lock-in Period Explained
Three years is the minimum holding period, not the recommended one. During the lock-in you cannot redeem, switch, transfer or pledge the units. There is no premature exit at a penalty, no loan against units, no exception for emergencies. In the rare event of the unitholder's death, nominees can usually redeem after one year from allotment.
Treat the lock-in as a floor. Equity needs seven to ten years to reliably do its job. Investors who redeem at exactly 36 months and immediately reinvest in a fresh ELSS for the next year's deduction are simply resetting the clock while paying LTCG each cycle — usually a worse outcome than staying put and funding the new deduction with fresh money.
ELSS Tax Benefits and Taxation of Returns
- At investment: deduction up to ₹1.5 lakh under Section 80C — old regime only. At the 30% slab, that is roughly ₹46,800 of tax saved including cess.
- During holding: nothing is taxable while units remain invested. Dividends under the IDCW option are taxed at your slab — which is exactly why the Growth option is the sensible default.
- At redemption: because of the mandatory three-year lock-in, every ELSS redemption is long-term. LTCG above ₹1.25 lakh in a financial year is taxed at 12.5% without indexation. Gains up to ₹1.25 lakh are exempt.
- No minimum: most ELSS funds accept SIPs from ₹500. There is no upper investment limit — only the ₹1.5 lakh deduction is capped.
A practical trick: if your ELSS gain is comfortably above ₹1.25 lakh, staggering redemptions across two financial years can let you use the exemption twice. Read our full breakdown of Section 80C and 80D deductions for AY 2026-27.
Does ELSS Still Make Sense Under the New Tax Regime?
This is the question that changes the answer for most salaried readers, and it deserves a straight response.
If you file under the new regime, ELSS gives you zero tax deduction. Section 80C is not available. At that point ELSS is just an equity fund with a three-year handcuff attached — and a plain flexi-cap or index fund does the same job with full liquidity. There is no reason to accept a lock-in you are not being paid for.
If you file under the old regime — typically because HRA, home loan interest, 80C, 80D and NPS together exceed your break-even — ELSS remains the strongest 80C instrument for anyone with a genuine long horizon. Run the comparison first, not after. Our guide on old tax regime vs new tax regime walks through the maths for common salary levels.
Common ELSS Mistakes to Avoid
- Starting a new ELSS every March and ending up with eight schemes you cannot name.
- Buying the regular plan through an agent when the direct plan of the same fund is available.
- Choosing the IDCW/dividend option and paying slab-rate tax on your own money coming back.
- Investing in ELSS while filing under the new regime — the lock-in without the deduction.
- Redeeming at month 36 out of habit rather than because you need the money.
- Investing ₹1.5 lakh in ELSS when your EPF and home loan principal have already filled 80C.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which is the best ELSS mutual fund in India?
There is no single best ELSS fund for everyone. The right one depends on your risk tolerance, horizon and existing portfolio. Filter on consistency across rolling periods, a low direct-plan expense ratio, stable fund management and downside behaviour — then pick one and stay with it.
What is the lock-in period for ELSS?
Three years from the date of allotment — the shortest of any Section 80C product. With a SIP, each instalment locks in separately for three years from its own date.
How much tax can I save with ELSS?
Up to ₹1.5 lakh of investment qualifies under Section 80C in the old regime — about ₹46,800 of tax saved at the 30% slab including cess. Under the new regime, no deduction is available.
Are ELSS returns guaranteed?
No. ELSS funds invest at least 80% in equities and carry full market risk. Returns are not assured and your fund can be below cost when the lock-in ends. Historical returns do not predict future performance.
Can I withdraw ELSS before three years?
No. There is no premature withdrawal facility, even with a penalty. The units are locked and cannot be redeemed, switched or pledged during the lock-in.
ELSS or PPF — which is better?
They solve different problems. PPF offers fixed, tax-free, sovereign-backed returns over 15 years. ELSS offers market-linked growth with a three-year lock-in and taxable LTCG. Most balanced portfolios hold both rather than choosing one.
Conclusion
ELSS is the rare tax-saving product that does not ask you to sacrifice growth for the deduction. Three-year lock-in, real equity exposure, concessional LTCG treatment and SIPs from ₹500 make it the most efficient instrument in the Section 80C basket — provided two conditions hold: you are filing under the old regime, and you are investing with a horizon well beyond the lock-in.
Get the regime decision right first. Then pick one good ELSS fund, start a SIP in April instead of March, choose the direct growth plan, and leave it alone. That sequence — not chasing last year's top performer — is what actually builds the corpus.
