GST Self Service Portal (selfservice.gstsystem.in): How to Report and Track GST Issues Online

Quick Answer: Taxpayers can report GST portal problems at the GST Self Service Portal — live since 22 January 2018. You describe the issue, the portal suggests a solution, and if that doesn't help you raise a ticket and get a ticket reference number to track it. The old email route, helpdesk@gst.gov.in, has been discontinued, so complaints sent there are no longer actioned. For phone support, use the GST helpdesk toll-free number 1800 1200 232.

Need someone to handle the complaint for you? Write to gstsupport@easytax.live or call 1800 572 8767.

Every GST taxpayer eventually hits a wall on the GST portal — a return that won't submit, a DSC that won't register, an ARN stuck in limbo, or an error code with no explanation. Before the Self Service Portal existed, the only options were a long email to the helpdesk and an even longer wait. GSTN replaced that with a structured grievance system where each complaint becomes a trackable ticket instead of an email that disappears.

This guide explains what the portal does, what it can and can't fix, exactly how to raise and track a ticket, and where to go when the portal itself isn't enough. You can also read our detailed walkthrough here: Complete guide to the GST Self Service Portal.

What Is the GST Self Service Portal?

The Self Service Portal is GSTN's official grievance redressal system for technical and procedural problems on the GST portal. It is built around a simple idea: most complaints are repeats of problems that already have documented solutions. So when you type your issue, the portal first shows you the relevant fix, FAQ, or user manual. Only if that doesn't resolve it do you escalate into a ticket.

Two things are worth knowing up front:

  • It handles system and process issues — errors, portal failures, registration and return filing problems, refund status queries.
  • It does not decide tax positions. It won't tell you your GST rate, settle a classification dispute, or rule on eligibility of input tax credit. Those need a tax professional or the formal channels under GST law.

How to Raise a Complaint on the Self Service Portal

Step-by-step

  1. Open selfservice.gstsystem.in and click Report Issue.
  2. Type a keyword from your problem — for example "GSTR-3B", "DSC", "ARN", or the exact error code shown on screen.
  3. Pick the matching category from the suggestions. The portal displays the known cause and fix for that category.
  4. If the suggested fix solves it, you're done — no ticket needed.
  5. If not, click No, I want to lodge my complaint and fill in your GSTIN, name, email, mobile number and a clear description of the issue.
  6. Attach a screenshot of the error, plus any relevant document (PDF or JPEG, within the size limit shown).
  7. Enter the captcha and submit. You'll receive a ticket reference number on screen and by email — save it.

How to check ticket status

Return to the portal, click Check Status, enter your ticket reference number and the captcha. You'll see whether the ticket is open, under process, or resolved, along with any response from the helpdesk. Tickets marked resolved can be reopened if the problem persists.

What Happened to helpdesk@gst.gov.in?

GSTN retired the email helpdesk in favour of the Self Service Portal. The reasoning is practical: email complaints arrived without GSTIN, without screenshots, and often without enough detail to diagnose, which meant a round of back-and-forth before work could even start. The portal enforces a structured form, so the first submission usually carries everything the support team needs.

The consequence for taxpayers: an email sent to the old address will not create a ticket and will not be tracked. If you emailed a complaint weeks ago and heard nothing, re-raise it on the portal.

Issues You Can Report Here

  • Registration: application stuck, ARN not generated, clarification not visible, core field amendment failing. See our guides on GST ARN status and the GST registration documents checklist.
  • Login and access: OTP not received, password reset failure, DSC or EVC not working. Related: GST login portal help.
  • Return filing: validation errors in GSTR-1 or GSTR-3B, offline utility failures, data not reflecting after upload.
  • Input tax credit: mismatch between GSTR-2B and books, credit not appearing in the ledger, blocked credit queries.
  • Payments and ledgers: challan generated but payment not credited, wrong head selected (see Form PMT-09), e-ledger balance mismatch.
  • E-way bill and e-invoicing: portal errors, IRN generation failures, 2FA problems.
  • Refunds: RFD application stuck, status not updating, deficiency memo queries.

Five Tips for a Faster Resolution

  1. Quote the exact error text. "Error while submitting GSTR-3B" gets a generic reply; the precise error code gets routed to the right team.
  2. Always attach a screenshot. Full screen, with the URL bar and timestamp visible if possible.
  3. One issue per ticket. Bundling three problems into one complaint usually means two of them get ignored.
  4. Record what you already tried. Mention the browser, whether you cleared cache, and whether you tried the suggested fix — it prevents a wasted reply telling you to do exactly that.
  5. Keep the ticket number safe. Without it you can't check status or reopen the ticket

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to log in to use the GST Self Service Portal?

No. The Self Service Portal is a separate site from the GST portal and does not need your GST credentials. You only enter your GSTIN and contact details inside the complaint form.

How long does a ticket take to resolve?

There is no published turnaround time. Simple, well-documented issues often close in a few working days; issues that need a technical fix at GSTN's end can take considerably longer. A clear description with a screenshot is the single biggest factor in speed.

Can I still email helpdesk@gst.gov.in?

No. That address has been discontinued. Complaints must go through the Self Service Portal or the toll-free helpline.

What if my ticket is closed but the problem isn't fixed?

Check the status using your ticket reference number and reopen it with a fresh screenshot showing the issue still occurs. If it's closed again without a fix, escalate through the helpline, quoting the ticket number and its history.

Can I ask a tax question on the portal?

No. The portal handles technical and procedural issues, not interpretation. For rate, classification, ITC eligibility or notice-related questions, consult a professional or explore our GST and tax compliance services.

Is there a way to track GST rule changes alongside my complaint?

Yes — many "portal errors" are actually the portal enforcing a new rule. Our latest GST news and updates and GST notifications summary pages track those changes.

Conclusion

The Self Service Portal turned GST grievances from unanswered emails into tracked tickets, and it remains the correct first stop for any portal-side problem. Use it with a precise error description and a screenshot, keep the ticket number, and escalate via the helpline when a ticket stalls. Where the issue is really about tax treatment rather than technology, the portal won't help — and that's where professional support saves time and money.
