PAN Card Status Check by Mobile Number (SMS, Online & Phone Methods)

⚡ Quick Answer

You can check PAN card status by mobile number in three ways — SMS your 15-digit acknowledgement number to 57575, call TIN helpline 020-27218080, or visit the NSDL Protean portal online. All three methods take under 2 minutes and work on any mobile phone.

You submitted your PAN application and now the wait begins. Whether you applied through NSDL (Protean), UTIITSL, or got an instant e-PAN via Aadhaar — tracking your PAN card status by mobile number is faster than most people think. You do not need to visit any office or log into any portal. A simple SMS or phone call is enough.

This guide covers every method available in 2026 — SMS, phone, online, and WhatsApp — along with what each status message actually means and exactly what to do when your PAN seems stuck.

Why tracking your PAN card status matters

A PAN card is mandatory for filing income tax returns, opening a bank account, buying or selling property, investing in mutual funds, and dozens of other financial activities. Once you submit your application, you are issued a 15-digit acknowledgement number. This number is your only reference until the PAN is allotted and delivered.

Tracking status early helps you catch problems before they escalate. Applications often get stuck because of a document mismatch, a photograph that didn't meet specifications, or a signature error. If you find out in week one instead of week three, you can resubmit and still get your PAN on time for whatever purpose you need it.

The three most common reasons people need to check PAN status urgently:

  • ITR filing deadline is approaching and they need PAN to file or to claim a refund.
  • They are opening a salary account or demat account and the employer or broker is asking for PAN.
  • They applied for a home loan or credit card and the lender requires a valid PAN for KYC.

In all these cases, a 2-minute status check can save days of confusion.

Method 1 — Check PAN card status by SMS (fastest method)

The SMS method works on any mobile phone — smartphone or basic feature phone — and does not require an internet connection. You get a reply within 30 to 60 seconds.

Steps to check PAN status by SMS

  1. Open the SMS app on your mobile.
  2. Create a new message with only your 15-digit acknowledgement number as the message text.
    Example: 1234567890ABCDE
  3. Send this SMS to 57575.
  4. Wait 30–60 seconds. You will receive an automated SMS reply with your current PAN application status.

Important points: Standard SMS rates apply. The acknowledgement number is printed at the top of the receipt you received at the time of submitting your PAN application form. If you applied online, check your email for the acknowledgement PDF. The number is exactly 15 characters — do not include spaces.

This method works for applications processed by both NSDL (Protean) and UTIITSL.

Method 2 — Check PAN card status by phone call

If you want a detailed verbal update or if the SMS is not working, call the TIN helpline directly. A customer care executive will look up your application and tell you the exact status.

Steps to check PAN status by phone

  1. Dial 020-27218080 (TIN customer care, operated by Protean eGov Technologies).
  2. Follow the IVR prompts and select the option for PAN application status.
  3. When connected to an executive, provide your 15-digit acknowledgement number.
  4. The executive will verify your identity with a basic question (name or date of birth) and share your status.

Helpline timings: Monday to Saturday, 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM IST. The helpline is closed on Sundays and public holidays.

Note: Helpline numbers are occasionally updated. Before calling, verify the current number at the official Protean eGov Technologies website or the Income Tax India website.

For UTIITSL applications, call 022-67931300 (UTIITSL customer care).

Method 3 — Check PAN card status online via NSDL Protean portal

The NSDL Protean online method gives the most detailed status update and works on both smartphone browsers and computers. Use this if you applied for PAN through the NSDL / Protean channel.

Steps to check PAN status on NSDL Protean portal

  1. Visit the official NSDL tracking page: tin.tin.proteantech.in/pantan/StatusTrack.html
  2. In the Application Type dropdown, select PAN — New / Change Request.
  3. Enter your 15-digit acknowledgement number in the field provided.
  4. Solve the alphanumeric captcha shown on screen.
  5. Click Submit. Your PAN application status will appear immediately.

You can also track by name and date of birth on the same page — useful if you have lost your acknowledgement number. Select the "Name" option instead of "Acknowledgement Number" and enter your last name, first name, middle name, and date of birth.

Note: The old URL tin.tin.nsdl.com still works but redirects to the new Protean domain. Always use the Protean URL for faster loading.

Method 4 — Check PAN card status online via UTIITSL portal

If your PAN application was processed through UTIITSL (UTI Infrastructure Technology and Services Limited), use this portal. Checking on the NSDL portal will not show your application.

Steps to check PAN status on UTIITSL portal

  1. Visit: trackpan.utiitsl.com
  2. Enter your 10-digit PAN number or 15-digit Application Coupon Number.
  3. Enter your date of birth in DD/MM/YYYY format.
  4. Fill in the captcha code.
  5. Click Submit to view your current PAN application status.

If you do not have your coupon number, use the PAN number option (available for correction and reprint applications where a PAN number has already been generated). The official UTIITSL tracking page is also linked from the Income Tax Department's official website.

Method 5 — Check PAN status on WhatsApp (Protean official service)

Protean eGov Technologies (formerly NSDL) has an official WhatsApp service that lets you check PAN application status without opening a browser.

Steps to check PAN status via Protean WhatsApp

  1. Save the Protean official WhatsApp number 8096078080 in your contacts.
  2. Open WhatsApp and send a message saying "Hi".
  3. Select "Yes" to allow communication from Protean.
  4. Tap ServicesStatus of Application.
  5. Select PAN Application and enter your 15-digit acknowledgement number.
  6. Your current PAN status will be displayed in the chat.

This is the most convenient method for smartphone users — no captcha, no browser, no typing URLs. It works 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, unlike the phone helpline.

Method 6 — Check instant e-PAN status via Aadhaar (Income Tax portal)

If you applied for an instant e-PAN through the Income Tax e-filing portal using your Aadhaar number, tracking works differently — you use the same portal, not NSDL or UTIITSL.

Steps to check instant e-PAN status

  1. Visit the Income Tax e-filing portal (incometax.gov.in).
  2. Under Quick Links, click Instant e-PAN.
  3. On the e-PAN page, click Check Status / Download e-PAN.
  4. Enter your 12-digit Aadhaar number.
  5. Enter the OTP sent to your Aadhaar-registered mobile number.
  6. Your e-PAN status will be shown. If allotted, you can download the e-PAN PDF directly from this page.

Who is eligible for instant e-PAN? Only individuals who have never held a PAN before, have a valid Aadhaar, and have a mobile number linked to their Aadhaar. The instant e-PAN is issued free of charge and is legally equivalent to a physical PAN card.

NSDL Protean vs UTIITSL — which portal should you use?

This is the most common point of confusion. India has two authorised PAN service agencies — NSDL (now rebranded as Protean eGov Technologies) and UTIITSL. Your application was processed by one of them, and you must check status on the correct portal. Using the wrong one will show no results.

How to know which agency processed your application: Look at the acknowledgement slip or email you received after submitting the form. It will mention either "Protean / NSDL" or "UTI / UTIITSL" clearly.

What each PAN application status message means

When you check your status via any of the methods above, you will see one of the following messages. Here is what each one means and what action, if any, you need to take.

Status messageWhat it meansWhat to do
Application receivedYour application has been received and is in queue for processing. No action needed. Check again after 3–5 working days.
Application under processYour documents are being verified by the processing agency. No action needed. Normal verification takes 3–7 working days.
PAN number allottedYour PAN has been generated. The 10-digit PAN number is now active. You can download your e-PAN now. Physical card will follow by post.
PAN dispatched / printed and dispatchedYour physical PAN card has been printed and sent by India Post or courier.Note the courier tracking number if shown. Delivery takes 3–7 postal days.
Objection raisedA document submitted is missing, unclear, or has a mismatch with your Aadhaar or PAN form data.Log in to your NSDL or UTIITSL account and re-upload the flagged document. Act within 15 days to avoid application cancellation.
Application not found / No record foundThe acknowledgement number entered may be incorrect, or your application has not yet been indexed (can take up to 24 hours after submission).Double-check the number carefully. If the application is new, wait 24 hours and try again.
Application rejectedYour application was rejected, usually due to a document deficiency or identity mismatch that was not resolved after an objection. You will need to submit a fresh PAN application with correct documents. Check the rejection reason in your registered email or portal account.

What to do if your PAN card is stuck or delayed

A physical PAN card should be delivered within 15 working days of successful verification. If it has been longer than that, or if the status has not changed in over 7 working days, follow these steps in order.

  1. Verify your acknowledgement number carefully. A single wrong character — including a misread zero vs the letter O — returns no results. Cross-check it against your original receipt or acknowledgement email.
  2. Check both NSDL and UTIITSL portals. If you are unsure which agency handled your application, try both. One will show your record.
  3. Download e-PAN while you wait. If your status shows "PAN number allotted" or "dispatched", your PAN is already active. Download the e-PAN PDF from the NSDL Protean or UTIITSL portal. It is legally valid for all financial purposes — KYC, ITR filing, bank accounts — without waiting for the physical card.
  4. Call the helpline. For NSDL applications: 020-27218080 (Mon–Sat, 9 AM–6 PM). For UTIITSL applications: 022-67931300. Have your acknowledgement number ready.
  5. Check for an objection in your portal account. Log in to your NSDL or UTIITSL application account. If an objection has been raised, it will be shown there with details of what is wrong and a deadline to respond.
  6. Raise a grievance online. Visit the Protean eGov website or the Income Tax India portal and submit a formal grievance with your acknowledgement number and contact details.

If your PAN card delivery is delayed beyond 30 days

Apply for a reprint of your PAN card through the Protean portal. Cost is ₹50 for e-PAN download or ₹107 for a fresh physical card delivered to your address. Processing takes approximately 10 working days.
