What inflation does to your money
Inflation is the slow, steady rise in prices that makes the same groceries, school fees and rent cost more each year. It never sends a notification, but it compounds exactly like an investment — working against you. At 6% a year, prices roughly double every 12 years.
This calculator shows both sides of that erosion: what a given expense will cost after a chosen number of years, and what today's money will actually be worth in purchasing power by then — with a year-wise schedule so you can watch the gap widen.
The inflation formula
Future cost = Amount × (1 + inflation rate)ⁿ
- Amount — the expense or sum of money in today's rupees
- Inflation rate — the expected annual rise in prices (6 means 6%)
- n — the number of years
The same compounding runs in reverse for purchasing power: the real value of today's money is the amount divided by (1 + inflation rate)ⁿ. The erosion figure is simply the difference between the amount and its real value.
How to use this calculator
- Enter the amount today — a monthly expense, an annual fee or a savings balance.
- Set expected inflation with the slider (1% to 15%, in half-point steps). 6% is a common planning assumption for Indian households.

The RBI targets consumer inflation of 4%, with a tolerance band of 2% either side. Households commonly plan at 6% to stay conservative, and push the assumption higher for costs that have historically outpaced headline inflation, such as education and healthcare. Whatever you assume, revisit it every few years.
They are two views of the same erosion. Future cost answers what this expense will cost then — useful for pricing goals. Real value answers what your money will buy then — useful for judging savings sitting idle. Both use the same rate; one compounds forward, the other discounts back.
Subtract it. What is left after inflation is your real return — a 7% fixed deposit during 6% inflation grows purchasing power by roughly 1% a year, before tax. This is why long-horizon money is usually pointed at assets expected to beat inflation, accepting market risk in exchange.
Rarely. Headline CPI tracks a fixed national basket; your own basket may be heavier on rent, school fees, travel or medical costs, each with its own trajectory. If your spending is concentrated in fast-rising categories, plan with a higher rate than the headline.
Keep short-term money safe and liquid, and give long-term money a chance to outgrow inflation — equity funds via SIPs have historically beaten it over long periods, though returns are market-linked and not guaranteed.
