What is the Senior Citizens Savings Scheme (SCSS)?
The Senior Citizens Savings Scheme (SCSS) is a government-guaranteed retirement income scheme introduced under the Government Savings Promotion Act to provide financial security and steady quarterly cash flow for senior citizens. Available through all post offices and designated public/private banks across India, SCSS currently offers an attractive 8.2% per annum interest rate.
SCSS has a fixed tenure of 5 years, with the option to extend in 3-year blocks indefinitely. Deposits can be made in lump sums from ₹1,000 up to a statutory ceiling of ₹30,00,000 (₹30 Lakh) per individual, making it the most trusted anchor for retirement portfolios.
Eligibility Criteria, Deposit Caps & Quarterly Payout Calendar
Key operational rules and eligibility requirements for opening an SCSS account include:
- Age Eligibility: Individuals aged 60 years and above can open an SCSS account immediately. Retirees under Voluntary Retirement Schemes (VRS) or superannuation aged 55 to 60 years can invest within 1 month of receiving retiral benefits. Retired defence personnel can invest starting from age 50 years.
- Deposit Ceiling (₹30 Lakh): An individual can invest up to ₹30,000,000 across all SCSS accounts. Spouses can open separate accounts, allowing a senior couple to invest up to ₹60 Lakh jointly/individually, earning guaranteed quarterly income.
- Fixed Quarterly Payout Dates: SCSS interest is not compounded; it is paid out directly into your savings bank account on the first day of each calendar quarter: 1st April, 1st July, 1st October, and 1st January.
The SCSS Interest Calculation Formula
Quarterly Income = Deposit (P) × (Annual Rate r ÷ 4)
- Quarterly Income — Fixed rupee amount credited to your bank account every 3 months.
- P — Principal amount deposited (up to statutory cap of ₹30,00,000).
- r — Sovereign notified interest rate (8.2% → 0.082; quarterly fraction = 0.0205).
- Annual Total Income — Exactly
Quarterly Income × 4.
Because interest is paid out quarterly rather than reinvested, your initial principal remains intact and is refunded in full upon maturity at 5 years.

- Total Interest Over 5 Years: ₹12,30,000
- Total Proceeds (Interest + Principal): ₹42,30,000

Tax Treatment: Section 80C, 80TTB Deductions & TDS Rules
Senior citizens must navigate the following tax rules under the Income Tax Act:
- Section 80C Benefit: Up to ₹1,50,000 of the initial deposit is eligible for tax deduction under Section 80C (Old Tax Regime).
- Section 80TTB Deduction: Senior citizens can claim a deduction of up to ₹50,000 per financial year on interest earned across post office and bank deposits under Section 80TTB.
- TDS under Section 194A: Banks and post offices deduct 10% TDS if SCSS interest exceeds ₹50,000 in a financial year. If your total taxable income is below the taxable threshold, submit Form 15H at the beginning of each financial year to avoid TDS.
- Premature Withdrawal: Permitted after 1 year with a 1.5% deduction on principal; after 2 years with a 1.0% deduction. Under revised 2023 rules, closure before 1 year is allowed with interest deducted.
The statutory deposit ceiling is ₹30,00,000 (₹30 Lakh) per individual (raised from ₹15 Lakh in Budget 2023). A husband and wife who are both eligible senior citizens can invest up to ₹30 Lakh each, totaling ₹60 Lakh per household.
The current SCSS interest rate is 8.2% per annum. Unlike floating rate products, the interest rate applicable on the day you open your account remains guaranteed and locked in for the entire 5-year tenure.
Interest is credited on a quarterly basis on the first working day of April, July, October, and January directly into your linked bank savings account. Interest cannot be compounded or left to accumulate inside the account.

Yes, SCSS interest is taxable under "Income from Other Sources". However, senior citizens can deduct up to ₹50,000 of interest under Section 80TTB. TDS at 10% applies if annual interest exceeds ₹50,000, unless you submit Form 15H.
If your estimated total income for the financial year does not exceed the basic tax exemption limit (₹3 Lakh under Old Regime or ₹3 Lakh/₹4 Lakh under New Regime), submit Form 15H to the bank or post office in April every year.
If closed after 1 year but before 2 years, an amount equal to 1.5% of the principal deposit is deducted. If closed after 2 years but before 5 years, 1.0% of the principal is deducted. If closed within the first year, interest paid will be deducted from principal.
An SCSS account can only be opened jointly with a spouse. The entire deposit belongs to the primary account holder, and the spouse can open a separate independent account up to ₹30 Lakh if eligible.
SCSS offers a higher return (8.2% vs 7.4% for POMIS), a higher deposit ceiling (₹30 Lakh vs ₹9 Lakh for POMIS individual), and Section 80C deductions. SCSS is superior for eligible seniors, while POMIS is open to all age groups.
