What is GST?
Goods and Services Tax (GST) is India’s single indirect tax on the supply of goods and services. Almost everything you buy or bill carries GST at one of the notified slabs — 0.25%, 3%, 5%, 12%, 18% or 28% — collected as CGST and SGST on sales within a state, or as IGST on sales across states.
This calculator works in both directions: it adds GST on top of a base price, or strips it back out of a GST-inclusive price. Either way you get the base amount, the CGST/SGST split, the total GST and the grand total — useful for quoting, invoicing and checking a bill.
The GST formula
GST = Base × r ÷ 100 · Base = Inclusive price ÷ (1 + r ÷ 100)
- Base — the price before tax
- r — the GST rate in percent
- Excluding GST — the first form: GST is added on top of the base you enter
- Including GST — the second form: the base is backed out of the inclusive price you enter, and GST is the difference
- CGST and SGST — for supplies within a state, the GST splits into two equal halves that go to the Centre and the state
How to use this calculator
- Pick the mode — Excluding GST if you have a pre-tax price and want the tax added, or Including GST if you have a final bill and want the tax inside it.
- Enter the amount. In exclusive mode this is the price before GST; in inclusive mode it is the GST-inclusive total.
- Select the GST rate — 0.25%, 3%, 5%, 12%, 18% or 28%.
- Read off the base amount, the CGST and SGST halves, the total GST and the total amount.
A worked example
₹1,00,000 before tax at 18% GST:
- GST: ₹1,00,000 × 18 ÷ 100 = ₹18,000 — split as CGST ₹9,000 + SGST ₹9,000
- Total amount: ₹1,18,000
Run the same numbers backwards: a GST-inclusive bill of ₹1,18,000 at 18% contains a base of ₹1,00,000 and ₹18,000 of GST — the two modes are exact mirrors of each other.

Slab assignments are notified by the GST Council and revised from time to time — the rates shown are current for FY 2025-26. Always confirm the slab for your specific product or service before invoicing.
For a supply within one state, GST splits equally into CGST (to the Centre) and SGST (to the state) — this calculator shows that split. For a supply across states, the full rate is charged as a single IGST instead; the total tax is the same either way.
Because the rate applies to the base, not to the inclusive total. A ₹1,00,000 GST-inclusive bill at 5% contains ₹4,761.90 of GST on a base of ₹95,238.10 — not ₹5,000. Dividing by (1 + rate) backs the base out correctly.
Registration is generally mandatory once annual turnover crosses ₹40,00,000 for goods or ₹20,00,000 for services (lower limits apply in special-category states), and regardless of turnover for inter-state supply and most e-commerce sellers. These thresholds are set by the government and can change.
Small taxpayers with turnover up to ₹1,50,00,000 can opt to pay GST at a flat concessional rate on turnover instead of the regular slab-wise mechanism. Composition dealers cannot collect GST from customers or claim input tax credit.
Every product and service maps to an HSN or SAC code with a notified rate. The slabs in the table above cover the common cases, but the GST Council revises rate lists periodically — check the current notification for your exact code before relying on a slab.
