What is a Post Office Time Deposit (POTD)?
A Post Office Time Deposit (POTD) — commonly known as the National Savings Time Deposit Account — is the government-guaranteed equivalent of a bank fixed deposit, administered through India Post's network under the Government Savings Promotion Act. Savers deposit a lump sum for a fixed tenure, earning sovereign-guaranteed interest backed by the Central Government.
POTD accounts are available in four distinct statutory tenures: 1 Year (6.9%), 2 Years (7.0%), 3 Years (7.1%), and 5 Years (7.5%). Interest is calculated using quarterly compounding, but paid out annually. The 5-year Time Deposit qualifies for income tax deductions under Section 80C.
Interest Structure, Annual Payouts & Tenure Slabs
Key operational and structural features of Post Office Time Deposits:
- Quarterly Compounding with Annual Payout: Unlike bank cumulative FDs (where interest is reinvested until maturity), POTD calculates interest with quarterly compounding, but officially credits the annual interest payout directly into your Post Office Savings Account at the end of each financial year!
- Four Tenure Slabs:
- 1-Year TD: 6.9% per annum
- 2-Year TD: 7.0% per annum
- 3-Year TD: 7.1% per annum
- 5-Year TD: 7.5% per annum (eligible for Section 80C tax deduction)
- No Upper Ceiling: Minimum deposit is ₹1,000 (in multiples of ₹100), with no upper limit on the total amount you can invest.
The Post Office Time Deposit Compounding Formula
Annual Interest = P × [ (1 + r/4)⁴ − 1 ]
- Annual Interest: Rupee interest credited to your savings account at the end of each completed year.
- P — Principal amount deposited.
- r — Sovereign notified interest rate (e.g. 7.5% → 0.075 for 5-Year TD).
- Maturity Payout: At the end of the tenure, your original principal
Pis refunded in full.

Tax Deductions on 5-Year POTD & Zero TDS Rules
Tax implications governing Post Office Time Deposits:
- Section 80C Deduction: Investments in the 5-Year Time Deposit qualify for income tax deduction up to ₹1,50,000 under Section 80C (Old Tax Regime). Tenures of 1, 2, and 3 years do not qualify for 80C.
- Zero TDS: India Post does NOT deduct any TDS (Tax Deducted at Source) on annual interest payouts or principal maturity! You must declare the annual interest in your ITR under "Income from Other Sources".
- Premature Closure: No deposit can be withdrawn before 6 months. If closed between 6 and 12 months, only Post Office Savings Account interest (4.0% p.a.) is paid. If closed after 1 year, interest is calculated at 2% below the applicable TD rate.
Current notified rates: 1-Year TD: 6.9%; 2-Year TD: 7.0%; 3-Year TD: 7.1%; and 5-Year TD: 7.5% per annum. All rates are compounded quarterly and reviewed every quarter by the Ministry of Finance.

Interest is calculated on a quarterly compounding basis, but is paid out annually directly into your linked Post Office Savings Account at the end of each financial year. It cannot be accumulated into principal.
