What is the Post Office Monthly Income Scheme?
The Post Office Monthly Income Scheme (POMIS) turns a one-time deposit into a fixed monthly payout. You invest once — up to ₹9 lakh in a single account or ₹15 lakh jointly — and the post office pays interest at the statutory rate, currently 7.4% p.a., as a fixed payout on the same date every month for five years. At maturity the full principal comes back.
Because the payout is simple interest, never compounded, the math is refreshingly transparent. Enter your deposit and this calculator shows the monthly income, annual income, total interest over the five-year term and the principal returned at the end.
The MIS payout formula
Monthly income = Deposit × 7.4% ÷ 12
- Deposit — your one-time investment (₹1,000 minimum; ₹9 lakh single / ₹15 lakh joint ceiling)
- 7.4% — the statutory annual rate currently notified by the Government of India, revisable quarterly for new accounts
Interest is paid out every month as simple interest — it is never added back to the principal, so there is no compounding. The principal itself is returned intact at the end of the 5-year term.
How to use this calculator

The 7.4% rate is the currently notified GoI rate and can be revised quarterly for new accounts; the rate at opening stays fixed for your full 5 years. Deposits above ₹9 lakh require a joint account.
Yes — the payout is interest, taxed at your slab rate under income from other sources, and there is no section 80C benefit on the deposit. TDS is generally not deducted on MIS payouts, so the onus is on you to report the income in your return. Under the new regime for FY 2025-26, total income up to ₹12 lakh is tax-free after the 87A rebate.
₹9 lakh in a single account and ₹15 lakh in a joint account (each joint holder's share counts toward their individual ₹9 lakh ceiling across all their MIS accounts). The minimum is ₹1,000, in multiples of ₹1,000.
