What is the Post Office recurring deposit?
The Post Office recurring deposit (5-Year Post Office RD) is India Post's monthly-saving scheme: a fixed instalment every month for exactly five years, at an interest rate set by the Government of India and revised every quarter. The rate your account opens at stays locked for the full five years, and deposits start from just ₹100 a month.

The Post Office RD formula
FV = P × [(1 + i)^(4t) − 1] ÷ [1 − (1 + i)^(−1⁄3)]
- FV — the maturity value after 5 years
- P — your monthly deposit, paid at the start of the month
- i — the quarterly rate: annual rate ÷ 400 (6.7% gives i = 0.01675)
- t — the tenure in years (5 for this scheme)
This is India Post's own convention: quarterly compounding, with deposits made between quarter ends growing for the fractional quarter they are held.

A worked example
₹5,000 a month at 6.7% p.a. for the full 5 years:
- Total deposits: 60 instalments × ₹5,000 = ₹3,00,000
- Interest earned: ₹56,829.14
- Maturity value: ₹3,56,829.14
Growth is steady: ₹62,210.16 at the end of year one, ₹1,99,746.04 by year three. A ₹2,000 instalment on the same terms matures to ₹1,42,731.66.

The Ministry of Finance notifies small-savings rates every quarter. The rate in force when you open the account is locked for your full five years — later revisions only affect new accounts. Always check the current quarter's notification before booking.
Yes — at your slab rate, under income from other sources. Deposits do not qualify for section 80C. Under the new regime for FY 2025-26, total income up to ₹12 lakh (₹12.75 lakh salaried) is tax-free after the 87A rebate, but the interest still has to be reported in your return.
A default fee of ₹1 per ₹100 of denomination applies for each defaulted month, and the account can be revived within the permitted window. After four consecutive defaults the account is treated as discontinued. The projection above assumes every instalment is paid on time.
Premature closure is allowed after three years from opening, but the account then earns only the Post Office savings-account rate — a meaningful haircut. A loan facility against the balance (up to 50% after 12 instalments) is usually the better escape valve.
Yes — a matured 5-year RD can be extended for up to five more years, and the extension continues at the rate at which the account was originally opened.
